Sri Lankan Americans for Unity and Prosperity today held a protest rally against unjust UN resolutions between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm in front of the State Department Building at 8701 South Gessner in Houston, Texas. Over 100 Sri Lankans from the Houston region attended the rally to voice their opposition to ongoing aggressive stand by the US against Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka quelled the Terrorist organization, the Tamil Tigers, in May 2009- ushering in peace and prosperity to all races (Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and Burgers) in this island nation after three decades of conflict. Sri Lanka has been making steadfast progress in reconciliation and is currently experiencing commendable economic growth.
However, since the end of the war, numbers of countries misinformed by various groups have attempted to hinder the reconciliation process by bringing forth various unfounded allegations. Although the United States and Sri Lanka have maintained a cordial relationship for over 200 years, the U.S., US, under the present administration, has joined these groups.
A handful of US Senators brought forward a resolution against Sri Lanka in the US Senate as well as a few countries led by the United States and the UK, have tabled a resolution last week for consideration in late March 2014. Sri Lankan Americans in Houston protested these actions during the rally and urged US to withdraw any resolutions against Sri Lanka at UNHRC. Furthermore, attendees vowed to take further actions to safeguard sovereignty of Sri Lanka. The organizers reported that similar rallies are planned in a number of major cities in the US.
During the event, the organizing committee handed over a signed petition addressed to US Secretary of State, Hon. John Kerry requesting that the United States honor Sri Lanka's political autonomy, by respecting Sri Lanka's own reconciliation process. The committee members also met with Mr. Allen Greenberg, Regional Director of the US State Department and detailed tremendous progress achieved by Sri Lanka in the affected areas in regard to socio-economic development.
