Of that threat to sue William Hague - Island Editorial
A front organisation of the LTTE banned in the UK has initiated
action to sue the British Foreign Secretary William Hague over what it calls the
Foreign Office's failure to declare Sri Lankan military attache in London, Maj.
Gen. Prasanna Silva, and his family personae non grata.
Informing Hague of its client's decision, a law firm
representing the interests of the Global Tamil Forum (GTF) has said, in a
letter, according to The Guardian newspaper: "You have informed us that the
Global Tamil Forum and other organisations have made representations to the FCO
[Foreign and Commonwealth Office] with credible evidence of the offences
allegedly committed by Major General Prasanna Silva during the war in Sri Lanka.
However, hitherto, the FCO has failed to declare Maj. Gen Silva and his family
personae non grata."
Has the LTTE mistaken London for Kilinochchi under Prabhakaran's
rule to demand that punishment be meted out to people arbitrarily? Allegations
against Maj. Gen. Silva have not been substantiated and there is no ground for
the British government to take any action against him.
It will be interesting to know Hague's response to the GTF's
threat to sue him. Has he really said that 'that the Global Tamil Forum and
other organisations have made representations to the FCO with credible evidence
of the offences allegedly committed by Major General Prasanna Silva during the
war in Sri Lanka'? Hague's reply will help us guess whether he himself has
written the script for the unfolding drama.
The GTF alleges that Maj. Gen. Silva, who has lived in the UK
since 2010, was involved in systematic attacks on Tamil civilians between
January and May 2009, when he was a senior commander in the Sri Lankan army. If
the army's policy had been to eliminate civilians systematically, would over
300,000 Tamil people ever have fled from the LTTE to seek refuge in the areas
held by the troops commanded by officers like Maj. Gen. Silva? The army could
easily have mowed down more than 11,000 LTTE cadres who either surrendered or
were taken into custody without taking the trouble of rehabilitating and
releasing them. How could an army that spared the lives of enemy combatants be
accused of systematically killing civilians?
The British ban on the LTTE is an eloquent argument for the fact
that the LTTE committed crimes against civilians throughout its terrorist
struggle that spanned three decades. Its terrorism would not have been possible
but for funds raised in the UK by the very terror activists who are now
campaigning for human rights. The LTTE had its headquarters in London while it
was committing crimes against civilians in SriLanka. The UK continues to turn a
blind eye to terrorist activities on its soil. It is for aiding and abetting
terrorism that some British politicians should be sued.
The UK has firmly subscribed to the Darusman report which
claims, inter alia, that the LTTE committed war crimes, and therefore it ought
to take action against the LTTE leaders on its soil before targeting Sri Lankan
diplomats who were instrumental in neutralising the LTTE which has been
proscribed in the EU, the US etc for its mindless terrorism, gun running, child
conscription, political assassinations, money laundering, narcotics trade and a
host of other crimes. Anton Balasingham's wife Adele, who was in charge of
brainwashing abducted Tamil girls and turning them into suicide cadres including
human bombs, is living in Britain.
The UK may not have wanted to take any action against the late
Balasingham as he was a British citizen and former employee of the British High
Commission in Colombo, but there is no reason why it should not arrest Adele for
the war crimes which the LTTE committed according to the Darusman report.
There are many other LTTE activists operating in Britain and it
is high time someone sued the Cameron government for its failure/refusal to take
action against them despite the fact that the LTTE is a banned terrorist
organisation in the UK.
