H E the President declares open trade complex at Kilinochchi
H.E. the president handed over the newly built
Kilinochchi supermarket complex comprising of two buildings to the public
yesterday (25th September). The ownership of 110 shops built under the 1st phase
of the Kilinochchi supermarket complex project were thus handed over to the
traders. The supermarket complex comprises of 64 vegetable outlets and 46 fish
and meat stalls.
The government had spent 38 million rupees for the 1st phase of
the project and the second phase is estimated to cost 200 million rupees.
Later the President attended another function organized to mark
the connecting of the Jaffna peninsula to the national electricity grid after a
period of 25 years.
The President inaugurated the operations of the Killinochchi
substation of the Ceylon Electricity Board and the 132 KW transmission line from
Vavuniya to Killinochchi. The Jaffna Peninsula is linked by way of 33KW
transmission line from the Kilinochchi substation and construction of another
132KW transmission line from the Killinochchi substation to Chunnakam in Jaffna
is in progress under the second stage of the project.
On 6th October 1987, the LTTE terrorists destroyed the total
electricity network to the Northern peninsula. The Electricity Board completed
the erection of the Kilinochchi high voltage transmission lines within a period
of 2 years and 238 transmission towers have been constructed from Vavuniya to
Kilinochchi with a total cost of 3,200 Million.
Over 121,000 consumers will benefited by the project and plans
are underway to open a 24MW thermal power station next year to cater to the
future demands. The government has already taken steps to provide electricity
supply to all households by the end of this year.
Hon minister of economic development Basil Rajapaksa, Hon
minister Douglas Devananda, Hon Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa, Governor
of the Northern Province Maj Gen (Retd) GA Chandrasiri, Inspector General of
Police, Government Agent of Jaffna, provincial politicians, government officials
and a large number of public attended the event.
