Sensitive information provided to the German Intelligence Service by the Sri Lanka Embassy in Berlin and complaints made by the peace-loving Tamil community in Germany led to last week’s arrest of six Tamil men suspected of raising funds for the LTTE, Major General Jagath Dias, Sri Lanka’s Deputy Ambassador in Berlin said.
Talking to Sunday Island over the phone from Berlin, he said although LTTE terrorism was wiped out from Sri Lanka, its overseas network is still live and active and it could still pose a threat to the sovereignty of the country.
Major General Dias thanked the German Government and the Intelligence Services for arresting the six LTTE suspects, who are members of the German-based Tamil Coordination Committee (TCC) headed by 34-year-old Vijikanendra.
Police also searched eight premises, including the TCC’s centre in Oberhausen, in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The LTTE is a proscribed organization in the European Union since 2006.
