Fonseka faces Court Martial today

Former Army Commander and defeated presidential candidate General (retd) Sarath Fonseka will face a Court martial today, at Navy Headquarters, on three charges including that of participating in politics while in office.
Today’s court martial would be the first ever military trial against an officer of the highest rank in the history of the Sri Lanka Army.
A three-member tribunal comprising Majors General named by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, on the instructions of the Army Commander Lt. Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya would try the ex-army chief at a special Court to be set up at the Navy Headquarters.
General Fonseka is entitled to retain lawyers of his choice.
Another trial on four charges, including that of violating military procurement procedures, would commence tomorrow (17).
The Court Martial is held in accordance with the Sections 124 (1), 102 and 109 of the Army Act.
