Expatriates to unite in countering false propaganda

Senior representatives of the Sri Lankan expatriate community in Europe, North America, Australia and India will unite their efforts to counter the disinformation campaign of the pro-LTTE Tamil diaspora. Several leaders of the expatriate community exchanged ideas on a joint campaign, said two leaders of France, Ananda Dodangoda and Saman Mannapperuma. They are in contact with community leaders Ranjith Soysa (Australia), Edward Perera (Germany), Anura Medagedara (London) and few others, Sri Lankan High Commission sources in New Delhi said in a despatch.
They have urged the Sri Lankans in Europe to join the proposed demonstration in Geneva next week.
During their meeting with President Mahinda Rajapaksa last month, the President emphasized the need for an effective pro-Sri Lanka campaign through a strong communication network to counter bogus publicity generated overseas against the country.
The expatriates can play a leading role in such mechanism, he said. Addressing the group, Sri Lankan expatriates from Europe and Australia at Temple Trees, President Rajapaksa said: "It is the duty of our expatriates to counter this disinformation and build a healthy public opinion in the West for Sri Lanka."
Participants at the discussion too, agreed with him that there is need for a stronger mechanism to counter LTTE propaganda.
The President appreciated the contribution made by Sri Lankans living aboard during the period of the conflict and urged them to use their knowledge, entrepreneurship and financial support to rebuild the country.
