‘Govt won’t be driven by haste’
Nadira GUNATILLEKE
It took five years for the US to release the report on the 9/11 incident. But nobody raised any questions about the delay. The elements which raise the question of ‘delay’ have no ethical right to do so in a ‘indecent hurry’, said Mass Media and Information Minister Keheliya Rambukwella.
The LLRC report will presented to the Parliament as soon as possible, Cabinet Spokesman and Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said.
Addressing the weekly cabinet press briefing at the Government Information Department Auditorium yesterday Minister Rambukwella said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa is now reading the LLRC report. But reading the LLRC report is not the only task of the President. He has many other state affairs to attend. It is a report on the three decades long war and can not be digested in 2 weeks.
According to Minister Rambukwella the elements which are in this innocent haste did not sound urgent while the whole country was being destroyed by the terrorists killing thousands of people including the head of state of a neighbouring country. The terrorist killed thousands of people and destroyed billions worth properties. The Government should make sure that another war will not take take place in the country hereafter. The ethnic issue commenced in 1948 and it reached its peak in 1956, 1983 etc. The country’s got image suffered. Human rights became an issue in Sri Lanka since terrorism started. Suddenly lakhs of people fled to areas controlled by armed forces. Now de-mining is over by 70 percent. It is very pathetic to see how certain elements be little this whole process simple and unimportant.
Minister Rambukwella pointed out that President Rajapaksa decided to appoint the LLRC a long time before the humanitarian operation ended. It is we, Sri Lankans who suffered for 30 long years and it is we, who are going to be benefited by the LLRC report. Therefore it is up to us to be concerned about it. But we are noy needy to be pushed around. No external pressure led us to appoint the LLRC. The LLRC was appointed with a correct vision. Some elements created trouble from day the LLRC was established. The LLRC was established by Sri Lanka for the benefits of Sri Lankans
