Army assists resettlement


In response to a request made by civilians who have returned to their lands after de-mining was completed in Mavaddipuram area, Headquarters Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J) last week mobilized sufficient troops and heavy machineries of 10 Field Engineers at Mailiddy to clear the thickets and shrub jungles in their lands.

Lands that had been abandoned for decades due to terrorist activities of the LTTE were handed back recently to their original owners after de-mining. However the returning civilians were faced with the overwhelming task of clearing their land by now had overgrown with shrubs and trees.

Stepping into assist the civilians, the Army utilized its personnel and machinery to clear the lands and bring relief to the civilians. This is yet another instance where the Sri Lankan security forces have forward to render humanitarian assistance to the civilian population of the north and east.

Since the end of war the government and the security forces have initiated many programmes to assist the civilian population of the north and east. These people friendly projects have helped to build better understanding, cooperation, and trust between the security forces and the local populace.

The total area of lands to be cleared in Veemankamam North, Veemankamam South, Mavaddipuram and Mavaddipuram South Gramaseva Division cover an area of nearly 75 acres.
