Wanni resettled people receive legal documents

Over 90% of the resettled people in the Wanni have been provided with legal documents, government officials said.
Kilinochchi Government Agent (GA) Roopavathi Ketheeswaran told The Nation that the government had expedited the process of providing legal documents to resettled people by conducting mobile services in rural villages.
“We continue to provide mobile services as and when the need arises. Otherwise, people can follow the usual procedure of applying to the respective Divisional Secretariats,” she said. “Over 90% have obtained their legal documents through our initiatives,” she said.
The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) alleged that the government delayed the process of providing death certificates to play down the number of those killed during the final stages of the war. Ketheeswaran rubbished such allegations and said death certificates were provided to the respective families of the deceased, once they declared the person was dead.
“The families of those who have gone missing could obtain death certificates if their search via all available avenues has failed,” she added.
