Colombo under CCTV surveillance
www.defence.lk">The CCTV cameras that have been installed in the city of Colombo to combat crimes and ease traffic congestions commenced operations on Wednesday (29 Dec).
Defence Secretary Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa declared open the CCTV surveillance system on the 6th floor of Police Welfare Society Building where the control room is located.
The 105 close circuit cameras installed at vantage points in Colombo continuously transmit images and can be viewed at the control room on 28 LCD screens. Moreover, the unit is capable of storing images for several days.
This project is the brainchild of the Defense Secretary and he had proposed the installation of security surveillance cameras in capital cities.
Senior DIG Gamini Navaratne spearheaded the project completed at a cost of 227 million rupees.
Speaking at the inaugural function the Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasooriya has said that the system fulfils a contemporary need and will assist to curb any illegal or criminal acts in the city of Colombo .
Sri Lanka Telecom, The Ceylon Electricity Board, University of Moratuva, Metropolitan Company LTD and the Colombo Municipal Council have assisted the police department to complete the project.
