Mahabodhi temple attacked: LTTE move to provoke backlash suspectedJanuary 25, 2011, 7:09 am

An unidentified group last night stormed the Mahabodhi Temple in Chennai and assaulted those present there including five Buddhist monks. Chief Incumbent of the temple, Ven. Banagala Upatissa Thera had been hospitalized, sources told The Island.
The Chennai police had initiated an investigation into the attack by the time this edition went to press. According to government intelligence
sources, the LTTE activists were involved in the attack aimed at provoking a backlash in Sri Lanka.
The police have been placed on alert here to prevent trouble makers from cashing in on the situation. A highly placed government source told The Island that everything was under control in India and the Defence Ministry had contacted the Mahabodhi Temple immediately after the attack.
Colombo was in touch with New Delhi over the assault of monks and steps had been taken to provide the temple with security, sources said.
