Tamil-speaking policemen to be enlisted in N-E
by Jayampathy Jayasinghe
A massive recruitment program has been launched to enlist Tamil-speaking men and women from the Northern and Eastern provinces to foster a good relationship between diverse ethnic communities, Police Media Spokesman, SP Ajith Rohana told the Sunday Observer.
Fifty Tamil-speaking males have been selected as Sub Inspectors of Police to undergo training at the Police Training School at Kalutara from January 25.
On completion of training the Probationary Sub Inspectors of Police will be posted to Tamil- speaking areas of the Northern and Eastern provinces where they can attend to their work in their own language.
This is the largest batch of Tamil-speaking Police Sub Inspectors to be selected since the setting up of the Police Department almost 146 years ago.
The Police Spokesman said that following the recruitment drive launched last year the Police Department had received a large number of applications from Tamil- speaking individuals, men and women from the Northern and Eastern provinces who have expressed their willingness to join as police constables.
The prospective applicants are being interviewed by senior police officers to fill the cadre of 350 constables which had fallen vacant in Northern and Eastern provinces. “We hope to recruit these constables as early as possible and they will be posted to Tamil-speaking areas,” he said.
