Many LLRC recommendations constructive - UK

The Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) report contains many constructive recommendations for post conflict reconciliation and a political settlement, said British Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Alistair Burt in a statement to the British Parliament expressing the government’s views on the LLRC report.
Burt added that the implementation of these recommendations is the real test of Sri Lanka’s progress.
“We agree with the recommendation that more action be taken to help internally displaced persons rebuild their lives,” he said.
The British Parliamentary Under Secretary said the British Government has consistently condemned terrorism in all its forms. The LTTE is a brutal and ruthless organization which remains proscribed in the UK, he said.
“Our long-term interest is in a stable, peaceful Sri Lanka, free from the scourge of terrorism, and as a fellow member of the Commonwealth, conforming to the standards and values which Commonwealth membership requires,” he added.
Mr. Burt said that Britain values reconciliation among the people of Sri Lanka and said it has to be achieved through an honest acknowledgement of the past and processes, in which all parties take part, to ensure justice, reconciliation and political progress.
He also noted that the British Government will remain committed to helping Sri Lanka achieve lasting peace and reconciliation and will work with international partners to this end.
The British Government also welcomed the public release of the LLRC report.
