IDPs drop to 6,553

The total number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Menik Farm relief village has declined to 6,553 as of today (Jan. 10) According to the Competent Office for the IDPs, 104 IDPs from 39 families were resettled on January 06 in Kokkuthuduvai North and East GN divisions. Actions are afoot to resettle another batch of IDPs in Kokkuthuduvai Central soon. Accordingly, seventy seven (77) IDPs from 20 families will be resettled there. A village is being constructed in Kombavil to resettle the rest of the IDPs. It is expected to build houses there to facilitate 5701 IDPs from 1729 families. Two hundred houses have been constructed so far. The Government has released and resettled 275,065 IDPs so far under its programme for speedy resettlement. Accordingly, 236,429 IDPs from Vavuniya, Mannar, Trincomalee and other districts have been resettled in their places of origin.The Government released 27,720 IDPs for humanitarian reasons. They include the elderly, university students, infants with family members, pregnant women and foreign passport holders.10, 916 IDPs in the Jaffna District were also resettled in their places of origin, including Jaffna, Mannar, Vavuniya and Trincomalee.
