Towards prosperity - Northern water-supply development

Destroyed Kilinochchi Water Tower

The water supply network of the Northern and Eastern Provinces was not renovated during the period of three decade long conflict. Much of the irrigation and supply infrastructure had been destroyed by the tiger terrorists as an act of revenge and also to drive them out from their native places. With the eradication of LTTE terrorism, the government took measures to renovate and re-establish water supply system and provide safe drinking water to the people in the Northern Province.

A number of major water supply projects under the theme of 'Drinking Water for All' (Semata Paaniya Jalaya) were initiated. The aim of the government was to provide water for those who had been badly affected by the scarcity of water in the Northern Province. During the dry season people undergo many hardships to find water for their day-to-day needs.

The Vidathalathivu Water Supply Project was implemented to cater to the needs of 8,500 people and a sum of Rs 204 million has been allocated for the project. Meanwhile, plans are underway in Vavuniya to provide purified water from the Nandukarni project costing Rs 175 million. The Mallavi project is in progress to supply water for 4,500 people at a cost of Rs 192 million. Simultaneously, the Rs 92 million Oddusudan project is also nearing completion.
