Southern Highway - Simply Amazing!
Due to modern technology, the transition that the world is
undergoing, the population needs are growing putting pressure on dire needs for
human existence. One such is transport. We have to make sure that the congestion
doesn't worsen with the increase in human needs. With the government's new
welfare policy, it is
 true that it is
trying to cope with the growth through better transport strategies to create
better public transport provisions. The Southern highway is such an outcome.
Thanks to the State, we are witnessing a very high level of improved transport
system.
Building better transport is the cheapest way to move forward to
build a stronger economy. It is interesting to look at how it has been tackled
successfully.
The southern highway is regarded as one of the best engineering
feats. Kottawa is the start of the highway stretching nearly 72 miles from
Colombo.
The long scenic drive extends from Kottawa in the North to Galle
in the South. You can start at the junction overlooking Kottawa or if you are
heading from the South, from Galle. The journey can be completed within a short
time.
Future expectations
This has become the busiest route to the South. This is the
start of the longest route when extended to deep South. Arrangements are
underway to develop this highway. Festive seasons are a great time (Kataragama,
Dondra etc.) that demand its extension to the far end. The area is very rich in
history which should be dealt with separately. This area has a surprising range
of natural wonders and other attractions that make it a perfect highway to head
for your destination once it is extended further down. Southern Sri Lanka can be
proud of many things to see. There are those who regularly explore different
areas and the travel opportunities provided will not be of less importance.
Once completed, it will be extended all the way to Hambantota
and then to Kataragama, which is yet to be done. It will be surrounded by forest
with plenty of scenic picnic spots. Another attraction not to be missed is the
white sand wayside beaches with clear water.
The scenic drive is originally a section of the railway line.
The old railway tracks will then be gone. Part of the route will run parallel to
Galle - Matara road. It hugs the coast for most of the way while passing
through.
The present highway
 This is a route in
operation all year round. This route goes past a number of towns, famed for its
spectacular coastline and stunning views along the highway.
The spectacular view and the short duration make it well worth
the effort. Part of the route runs parallel to Colombo - Galle road. There are
sign posts all along the way. There is also a series of connecting paths. Boards
indicating speed limit and also the distance to important destinations are there
for the guidance of the motorist.
Most drivers stick to the speed limit. Speed cameras also have
been installed to monitor the traffic violators and fines have been imposed to
minimize wrong doers.
There are many measures to provide high level protection and
security to the traveler. The authorities have a duty of care to ensure that all
steps have been taken to mitigate risks and enhance safety behind the wheel.
Failure to comply with legislative requirements may leave the traveller open to
legal action.
The idea behind is to see that motor vehicle crashes are avoided
as far as possible. Motorists are the road
 users.
They have a duty to obey the road signs and road rules and it is very important
for their safety provided that they share the same road.
Since this is an express highway, it does not offer a great
selection of cafes and restaurant all along the way to stop and relax.
Yet since recently, an architecturally designed novel shopping
complex and restaurants have been set up midway on either side at Welipenna,
under one roof to ensure ease and comfort.
It is one of the essential services that have come up adding
beauty to the locality which the highway could be proud of. It is a well
provided complex catering to all your requirements. Once the southern highway is
extended, fabulous restaurants and shops will continue to spring up along the
way giving it an exciting atmosphere.
