Various 'Pinkam' recall memories of much-respected Lt. Gen. Denzil kobbekaduwa and other war veterans
The 19th death anniversary of one of the finest and most respected War Heroes in our contemporary history, Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa and nine other war veterans, was remembered today (8th August) by grateful fellow-military officers/other ranks and people of Sri Lanka.
A series of commemorative Pinkam (meritorious deeds) at Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, alms giving at Lankaramaya, Thanthirimale Raja Maha Vihara and in its adjoining Pusiyankulam village, plus a wreath-laying ceremony at Anuradhapura took the centre stage in the day's events.
Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa whose leadership and command brought about many victories to the Army during early battles in bloody Eelam wars paid the supreme sacrifice in an LTTE blast on 8 August 1992 along with fellow-military veterans, Major General Wijaya Wimalarathne, Rear Admiral Mohan Jayamaha, Lieutenant Colonel H.R Stephen, Lieutenant Colonel G.H. Ariyarathne, Lieutenant Colonel Y.N Palipana, Commander Asanga Lankathilaka, Lieutenant Colonel Nalin De Alwis, Lieutenant Commander C.B Wijepura and Private W.J Wickremasinghe while they were on a military assignment in Araly Point area in Kayts, Jaffna.
Lieutenant General Kobbekaduwa's Regiment, Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC), organized a series of commemorative religious activities at Anuradhapura to pay respect to their legendary chief of our times, Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa, giving prominence to donation of dry rations to less fortunate in Thanthirimale, conduct of alms-givings and Bodhi Poojas, Dhamma sermons, etc.
Mrs Laly Kobbekaduwa took part in distribution of dry-rations to the needy and alms-giving to the Maha Sangha at Lankaramaya on Monday (8). Gift parcels containing essentials were distributed among 32 families living in Pusiyankulam Sunday (7) evening, headed by Mrs Kobbekaduwa before a Gilanpasa pooja and a commemorative sermon took place at Thanthirimale Raja Maha Viharaya under the aegis of Ven. Thanthirimale Chandaratana Nayaka Thero, Incumbent, Thanthirimale Raja Maha Viharaya.
Early Monday (8) morning, Mrs Kobbekaduwa in the company of Commandant, Armoured Training School at Kalettewa, Anuradhapura Area Commander, senior Police officers and a large gathering, joined together at the Denzil Kobbekaduwa statue in the heart of Anuradhapura town where floral wreaths were laid in memory of him. A special offering was made to the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi minutes after floral wreathing with the objective of invoking merits.
The concluding ceremony at Lankarama Viharaya, Anuradhapura Monday forenoon included an alms-giving to members of the Maha Sangha at Lankaramaya Vihara. Mrs Kobbekaduwa participated in the traditional Pen Wedima ritual and transferred merits to all fallen War Heroes.
Lt Gen Denzil Kobbekaduwa, an old Trinitian, joined the Sri Lanka Army on 25 May 1960. After the basic military training at the Army Training centre, he left for Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, UK for further training and was commissioned to the Sri Lanka Armoured Corps as a Second Lieutenant on 3 August 1962.
Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa along with several other military leaders made the supreme sacrifice when Tiger terrorists activated a blast against their vehicle on 8 August 1992 as they were in Araly Point in Kayts, Jaffna.
