Rescuing civilians was the duty, responsibility and obligation of the Government says HC Samarasinghe
www.defence.lk">"Rescuing civilians was the duty, responsibility and obligation of the Sri Lanka Government, from a ruthless terrorist organization", said Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Australia Admiral (Retd) TSG Samarasinghe.
He expressed these views during an interview with the Australian SBS news service on Monday (17 Oct).
Also denying the cynical allegations of 'war crimes' - a slogan constantly trumpeted by LTTE rump groups to avenge the defeat of LTTE, High Commissioner Samarasinghe stated that the military never deliberated in killing civilians but only deliberated in rescuing civilians.
"So there is no truth what so ever of these figures portrayed, flashed out by various organizations of any atrocities. Yes, civilians were killed by terrorists in their effort in trying to prevent them from running away to the waiting hands of the military", he said.
"Not only the civilians even the terrorist themselves ran away to the waiting hands of the military with absolute confidence. That is the reality on the ground. We rescued the terrorists and rehabilitated and within a very short period of time they are back with their families" he further stated.
