Oct 25, Colombo: In a move to show solidarity against anti-Sri Lankan elements, Sri Lankan expatriates in Australia today extended a warm welcome to their visiting President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa.
Thousands of Sri Lankans of Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim and Burgher gathered at the Winthrop Hall of University of Western Australia in Perth to welcome the Sri Lankan President who is in the country to participate in the 22nd Summit of the Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting (CHOGM).
Addressing the gathering, the President praised the Australian Government for nonexistence of protests from pro-LTTE elements in Australia although he had to face such protests when he visited some western countries recently.
External Affairs Minister, Prof. G.L. Peiris, Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Secretary to the President, Lalith Weeratunga Parliamentarian Sajin Vass Gunawardena and Sri Lanka's High Commissioner Admiral (Retd.) Thisara Samarasinghe participated in the occasion.
The President also met Australia's Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd and discussed the present situation in Sri Lanka and government�s plans to develop the north and to achieve a political solution to the ethnic question
