'Discipline pivotal for righteous society'
In spite of the country being rid of the terrorist menace, it is not an easy task to build a righteous society. Basic ingredients in this regard are the promotion of discipline and morality, said. President's Parliamentary Affairs Secretary Kumarasiri Hettige who was participating as the Chief Guest in the opening of the New Dharmasalawa and the renovated temple at the Sribodhimalu Viharaya in Kokmaduwa, Weligama.
'While temples and Stupas are being renovated and decorated islandwide, the humane qualities of some people are being fast eroded and cruel and sadistic tendencies are having a field day casting dark clouds over society.
He said "in the event of Sri Lanka not being blessed with the leadership of the President we would have been groping in darkness. Soldiers laid their lives for the freedom of the country.
'Terrorists had targeted the President and the members of his family. Screams of those who were subjected to bombs and landmines and the cries of the parents who lost their children as well as the parents who were deprived of their loved ones are still echoing in our hearts and minds.
"The fear psychosis and the uncertainty that prevailed in society had depressed Sri Lankan Society. 'It is only two years since we have overcome all these misery. "The task of eradicating the terrorist menace as well as reconstructing the economy of the island fell on the shoulders of the President and he bravely undertook both.
'We must assess whether we have been able to go forward in cultivating humane qualities and moral upliftment, he said.
'The society is faced with unsatisfactory scenes of moral degradation and disregard of social values."
Ven Aturaliye Jinarathana Thera also spoke.
