A seminar on the budget 2012, organised by the Inland Revenue Department will be held today from 5.30 pm at the Galadari Hotel, Colombo.
Finance and Planning Ministry Secretary Dr P B Jayasundara will deliver the keynote address.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Finance Minister will present the budget for the financial year 2012, which is also the third in the seventh Parliament as well as the third after the elimination of terrorism, at 1.30 pm today. The International Monetary Fund has said that the monetary conditions in Sri Lanka are conducive to support economic recovery.
This budget is the 65th budget of post independence Sri Lanka and the 34th budget of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
The Appropriation Bill for 2012 (first reading of the budget proposals) was presented in Parliament by Prime Minister D M Jayaratne on October 18. Seven days have been allotted for the second reading of the debate, which will commence on November 22 and last until November 30. The committee stage debate on the budget proposals has been allotted 17 days and will last from December 1 to December 21.
The second reading division will be taken November 30 at 5 pm while the Committee Stage division will be taken on December 21 at 5 pm.
The sittings will be held from November 22 to December 21 from 9.30 am to 6.30 pm.
The President met a large cross section of the public representing all sectors, communities and womens’ bodies from Vavuniya in the North and the South before the budget proposals were drafted. The President and the Finance Ministry held 56 meetings in which 2,718 representatives from all sectors in addition to ministers, deputy ministers, parliamentarians, government agents and officials submitted their ideas for preparing the budget proposals.
The projected expenditure of the government for economic development for 2012 is Rs. 2,220 billion. The anticipated revenue for 2012 is Rs. 1,115 billion.
