Defence Secy delivers talk on ‘How the war was ended’:

Self serving Politicos servicing terrorists

Govt. making untrammeled effort to consolidate hard won peace:

Certain politicians who are slavishly devoted to the service of LTTE terrorists are engaged in a dirty game of creating problems among the Tamil population to cling to power, Defence and Urban Development Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said yesterday.

He said these unscrupulous political elements are working to a different agenda to divide the people for narrow and petty gains instead of looking at the bigger picture and seeing the benefits that flow from a unitary state. The Defence Secretary said certain politicians in the mainstream parties, resort to false propaganda to achieve their sole objective of grabbing power at any cost ignoring national interest.

He was delivering a talk on ‘How the war was ended’ at a function organised as part of the Serendib Coast Festival 2013 at Light House Hotel, Dadella, Galle.

He was introduced to the international festivities in Galle by Herman Guneratne.

The Defence Secretary said some civil society stalwarts’ main agenda was to discredit the government by portraying a bleak picture about Sri Lanka to the world. “They are aided and abetted by sections of the media with vested interests,” he said.

The Defence Secretary was of the view that the machinations of the LTTE rump and other parties with vested interests were compounded by the strategic interest that certain states have in Sri Lanka because of its unique geographical position.

He said the government was making a tremendous effort to develop infrastructure facilities around the country including the North and East.

The government is undertaking a large-scale development drive to improve infrastructure such as roads, railways, electricity, water supply and sanitation, disposal of solid waste etc. Several flagship projects have been undertaken, he said.

Rajapaksa said the LTTE propaganda machine remains fully operational in a number of countries though the terrorist outfit has been completely wiped out.

He said by influencing foreign governments through the large number of expatriate Tamils who comprise an important voting block in many western democracies, the LTTE rump is still causing problems for Sri Lanka.

The Secretary said there are also many so called champions of Human Rights in the international media and in international NGOs who continue to attack the country.

“ Some have publicly accepted donations from groups linked to the LTTE ; many of them have been misled by LTTE propaganda and others are desperately trying to cling to causes to secure funding,” he said.

“Even in international forums such as the United Nations Human Rights Council, we can see that certain powerful countries and their allies are blatantly employing double standards when dealing with Sri Lanka.”

He said these countries have completely ignored our achievements.

“The LTTE’s terrorism has been eliminated. The senseless killings have stopped. Peace and stability has been achieved,” he said.

Founder of Serendib Coast Festival Geoffrey Dobbs also spoke.
