Troops serving Haiti help nab wanted criminals
Sri Lankan Army troops (SRIBAT) serving the stabilization mission in Haiti have thrown their full weight behind apprehension of anti-social elements and most wanted criminals at the request of local law enforcement authorities, in addition to their performance of routine assignments on daily basis.
A masquerading criminal, wanted in connection with a series of murders and crimes in Killik area, Haiti was recently apprehended and taken into SRIBAT custody along with a 9 mm US made pistol, 13 bullets and two cellular phones in his possession. In another instance, SRIBAT troops acted fast and made a major breakthrough when they arrested three more notorious criminals while they were in hiding carrying two US made high caliber automatic pistols, five filled magazines, six solar panels and a stock of stolen valuables.
Arrest of those four most wanted criminals by SRIBAT troops during sudden search operations launched. came in for praise of UN and Police authorities as there had been a heap of complaints made against those criminals. Later on, SRIBAT Commanding Officer Colonel A.M.R. Dharmasiri formally handed over those criminals to relevant authorities for onward actions.
Meanwhile, a joint road reconstruction project, launched by SRIBAT troops with Haiti-based Korean Engineering troops received appreciation from all quarters.
The strife and natural disaster struck public route No: 204 from Leogane to Jacmel was thus reconstructed jointly and made motorable. The project, ended in complete success within a short span of time, enabling better transport and movement facilities for the civil sector, also facilitated the reopening of several commercial outlets along the repaired road.
The Korean Army engineers, in high commendation for the role, played by the Sri Lankan contingent in the reconstruction task, felicitated those SRIBAT officers and Other Ranks by issuing letters of appreciation to each and everyone who contributed to the project at a specially organized ceremony, held as recent as last week.
The felicitation ceremony was attended by Mayor of Leogane, UN representatives and Colonel A.M.R. Dharmasiri, SRIBAT Commanding Officer.
Haiti-based Sri Lankan troops, as mandated continue to play the 'Good Samaritan' role by actively providing water and meals to refugee camps, Children's Orphanages, Homes for Elders, Centres for Mentally and Physically Handicapped Persons in Jacmel, Killik, Brache, Leogane areas and their outskirts.
