Dr. John Gunaratne, former Deputy Director General of the Peace Secretariat giving evidence at Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission yesterday has highlighted many flaws in the ceasefire agreement. He has said that there was no compulsion in the CFA for the parties to find a negotiated settlement, no prohibition on forcible conscriptions by the LTTE, no embargo on unlawful importation of arms ammunition and other materials and no enforcement mechanism relating to ceasefire violations. He has pointed out the LTTE taking advantage of these flaws continued violating the ceasefire agreement and even assassinating cabinet ministers including the former Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar.
In conclusion he has urged for the proper implementation of the official language policy since the constitution provides everyone their due rights and the Tamils in Sri Lanka value their identity very highly.
Members of the Commission of Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees yesterday. They briefed the President on the progress of the commission. The commission has inquired about improving livelihood of the people in the war affected areas. Various proposals have been received by the commission to regulate life of the northern and eastern people. The profound attention has been paid to solve language issues and ensure rights of the people. The Commission has already conducted 14 sessions in Colombo and six sessions in Vavuniya. The Commission is scheduled to hold another session from tomorrow to this Saturday in Kilinochchi.
The commission conduct open public sessions in the Kilinochchi area on the 18th and 19th of this month and in Mullaitivu on the 28th. Such open sessions are also to be conducted in the Jaffna peninsula from the 9th to the 13th of next month. The commission says open public sessions will also be conducted in the eastern province. The commission is continuing receiving representations from the general public. Any person willing to present facts before the commission must reserve a date to do so.
