Number reduced to 25,260 from over 280,000The total number of Internally Displaced Persons remaining in welfare centres in Vavuniya, Mannar and Trincomalee has come down to around 25000 from over 280,000 IDPs who fled the LTTE in the height of battle against terrorism in 2009
Government Spokesman, Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said that the delay in resettling these remaining people is due to delay in clearing the areas where they live.Though they are in welfare centres they are free to move. “They go to work in the morning and return in the evening” said Minister Rambukwella.Due to the government’s speedy demining and resettlement programme the government has resettled 203, 455 IDPs belonging to 62, 611 families in their places of origin, according to the Ministry of Resettlement. The IDPs who were in the relief villages in Vavuniya, Mannar and Trincomalee (Pulmoddai) have been resettled in areas including Kandy, Polonnaruwa, Puttalam, Kegalle, Badulla, Ampara, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Vavuniya, Mannar, Jaffna, Mullativu and Kilinochchi.Meanwhile, 27, 619 of IDPs have been released from the welfare centers on various medical and social grounds. Thus, the total of returned and released IDPs from Vavuniya, Mannar and Trincomalee Districts is 232,503.The total number of IDPs released from the Jaffna welfare centres to their places of origin is 10, 252. Accordingly, a total of 242,755 IDPs have been resettled from Vavuniya, Mannar, Trincomalee and Jaffna Districts.The government has ensured livelihood assistance to resettled IDPs by issuing dry rations.
