Eid-ul-Fitr messages
Muslims contributed much to Motherland - President
President Mahinda Rajapaksa in an Eid-ul-Fitr message states Sri Lanka's Muslim community has contributed much to the progress of the Motherland, Sri Lankan Muslims have lived in harmony with people of other religions and ethnicities.
The President's message:
www.defence.lk">I am pleased to send this message of greetings on the occasion Eid-ul-Fitr celebrated by the devotees of Islam today. This occasion marks the completion of the period of fasting and religious practice which is the most significant tradition of the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. The Muslim community of Sri Lanka joints its brothers in faith the world over in this time of rejoicing at the conclusion of the strict religious observances, in keeping with the teaching of the Holy Quran and the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
Sri Lanka's Muslim community has contributed much to the progress of their Motherland during their long history of presence in Sri Lanka. Over the years they have lived with those of other religions and ethnicities in harmony, and continue to do so. I am confident that Sri Lanka will receive their valued contribution in its development in the years to come, with the nation's resurgence from terrorism.
The festival is a happy occasion for Muslims in the entire nation as they are able to celebrate it unhindered in the conditions of restored peace in the country.
Muslims displaced due to terrorist atrocities are now being resettled in their places of origin enabling them to carry-out their traditions and religious activities with renewed commitment.
On this very special occasion we look forward to the lasting partnership of the Muslims of Sri Lanka to forge a new Sri Lankan nation of unity, tolerance and harmony.
I wish all followers of Islam of Sri Lanka a happy Eid - Ul - Fitr.
Eid - Mubarak!"
