SLAF opens airstrip at Kilinochchi
Sri Lanka Air Force Tuesday (July 20, 2011), opened an airstrip in the former LTTE stronghold of Killinochchi with the landing of a Y12 aircraft. Air Force Commander Air Marshall Harsha Abeywickrema was on board the aircraft.
This airstrip is situated seven kilometres away from the A 09 road and about a km off the Security Forces Headquarters in Killinochchi. The area in which the airstrip was developed by the SLAF had been utilized by the LTTE for training its cadres. .
This airstrip, to be referred as the Killinochchi airstrip will enable the SLAF's commercial arm, Helitours to carry out routine commercial flights to Killinochchi from the Ratmalana Airbase.
The introductory price of one way ticket to Killinochchi will be Rs 7,500.00. According to Sri Lanka Air Force sources, the biggest and the longest airstrip used by the LTTE at Iranamadu is being reconstructed by the SLAF.
