International forces at it again - President
Various international forces are obstructing the country when it is fully geared for development after the eradication of terrorism which had ravaged the country's progress for more than 30 years, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said.
He said the country faced similar obstacles when it was fighting with the one of the most ruthless terrorist outfits in the world - the LTTE which deprived the rights of all communities. Speaking at the opening of the first ever Postal Museum philatelic exhibition at the Postal Department, the President said the country is facing various international impediments even after the Government appointed a Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission.
He stressed that various elements are involved in aiding and abetting these international forces to achieve their petty and narrow objectives.
He stressed that the people should raise a single voice when they deal with the world. "There may be different political views among us but we should raise a single voice when we are dealing with the world," he stressed.
"We as the sons and daughters of this Motherland cannot indulge in such betrayal," he added.
The President added that he will not betray the country for petty gains and insisted that country has a well-established judicial system to uphold democracy.
He added that the judicial system in Sri Lanka is so independent that the Government respected several Supreme Court Judgments which appear to have surpassed even the legislative and executive ambit.
President Rajapaksa said the Government respected these Judgments and respected the independence of the judiciary. He said the country's independence is symbolized by the Judicial system.
President Rajapaksa opined that the people have very high respect towards the country's Judiciary and no force should be allowed to undermine it internationally. The President added that he has a responsibility of protecting and developing the country for posterity. "We should think where this country should be after 20 years."
He insisted that the people of all communities should show more commitment to protect and promote the sovereignty and territorial intergriety of the country.
The President was of the view that the country should move on par with other countries. The President added that massive development is inevitable with the completion of five harbours being constructed around the country.
He stressed that the objective of all these efforts is to uplift the living standard of the people and create an environment for posterity to win the world.
