USD 14 million UNDP funded project for post rehabilitation of Ex- combatants
The government is to launch a post rehabilitation program to train nearly 10,000 ex-combatants surrendered to the security forces during the last stages of the war in May 2009. Protective Accommodation and Rehabilitation Centres have been established in the Northern and Eastern Provinces under this programme.
According to Govt sources around 12,000 ex-combatants have been provided with rehabilitation programmes, consisting of education, catch-up education, vocational skills, information technology training etc before being integrated into the society.
The estimated cost for the programme for a period of two (02) years is about US$ 14 million and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has expressed its willingness to find the required financial resources for this post - rehabilitation program
Government Spokesman Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told news.lk that the Cabinet approval was given to the Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms on a Proposal by Minister DEW Gunasekara to implement the programme with the negotiation of UNDP The programme is to be implemented under the Medium Term Budgetary Framework in 2011 - 2013.
