42 Tamil youths successfully complete sinahala language course at Manipay
Effective interpersonal communication is one of the most important factors to foster communal harmony in a country. This need is significantly felt by members of the Sri Lanka Army serving in Jaffna as well as civilians since they constantly have to interact with each other.
To respond this need, on a concept of Commander Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, various Army formations in Jaffna have arranged Tamil language classes for soldiers at respective places.
Meanwhile, at request of civilians in Jaffna, SF-J has organized Sinhala language classes for enthusiastic adults and students in Jaffna. One such course that was held for 17 weeks at Manipay Ladies' College came to an end with award of certificates to those who successfully completed the course. Significant feature of the award ceremony was that students of the class themselves conducted the event and welcome speech and vote of thanks were delivered in Sinhalese language.
The ceremony included some Sinhala stage performances presented by the students, majority job-seeking school leavers.
Out of 42 students, Gayathri Jayaweerasingham, Geethanjalee Sri Lingam, Tharshani Sinnarasa, Sopika Krishnapillai and Kanakasuriyar Sivavarthalingam Chettiyar succeeded in getting a "B" grades with over 75% marks at the end-of-course test. 24 obtained between 75% and 50% and the rest got over 40%.
Classes that started in November 2010 were throughout conducted free of charge by experienced lecturer of Sinhalese language Prof. S. Leelakrishnan (JP), a visiting lecturer at the Kopay teachers' College.
The ceremony to award certificates was attended by the Commander 513 Brigade Brigadier Pradeep de Silva, Principal of Manipay Ladies' College Mrs. S. Jayaweerasingham and two well wishers, Mr. T. Thiruchelvam and Mr. K. Ravi Kumar and a large crowd.
