Following the arrest of Norwegian based LTTE leader Perinpanayagam Sivaparan alias Nediyawan in Oslo, Sri Lanka says it will assist the Norwegian and Dutch authorities in the investigations if a request is made.
Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Norway, Rodney Perera said he was aware of Nediyawan’s arrest and his embassy was following developments closely.
Asked if Sri Lanka would seek to obtain information from Nediyawan regarding LTTE activities in Sri Lanka and overseas, the Ambassador said that Sri Lanka would first wait for the Norwegian and Dutch authorities to contact Sri Lanka regarding the ongoing investigation.
The Ambassador said that LTTE activities on Norwegian soil had seen a drastic decrease in recent times, adding that Oslo was also now keen on cracking down on terrorism.
He said that several Tamils who had faced LTTE threats over the years
and had to pay extortion money to LTTE groups in Norway were now coming out and openly speaking against the outfit. The Norway News website said that Nediyawan, a prominent figure and "new leader" of the LTTE was being questioned over LTTE activities in the Netherlands.
A Dutch judge and five Dutch Defence Attorneys are in Norway to interrogate the LTTE leader Nediyavan, who is a resident of Norway.
