"Darusman Report" a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of SL security forces - says Army Chief
Army Commander Lt. Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya Friday (6 May) alleged that Darusman's panel report contained unsubstantiated allegations targeting the Sri Lankan military and deliberately attempting to tarnish the image of the President, Secretary Defence, Government, and the tri-services.
Addressing the troops at the Eastern Security Forces Headquarters at Welikanda, the Army Chief commented on the controversial UN report.
The Army Commander said "I perused the copy of the Darusman Report and found most of those allegations were based on mere hearsay and irrational assumptions."
The Army Commander said in his capacity as Wanni Commander during that stage of the Humanitarian Operations, he was well aware of the operations in the battlefield as well as in the enemy's territory and how the Sri Lankan forces fought the enemy with courage.
The Commander further said "the Army is in the process of responding to those allegations with precision."
Defence Secretary Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and External Affairs Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris early this week briefed the Colombo-based diplomatic Missions with regard to the panel Report commissioned by UNSG Ban ki-Moon, and measures taken by the Governemnt of Sri Lanka on post war development and rehabilitation of thousands of ex-combatants.
