Ambassador Athauda claims Tamils in Netherlands ready to support Lanka in Geneva

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa

In the wake of pro-LTTE factions lobbying against Sri Lanka, ahead of the UNHCR sessions in Geneva in March, Sri Lanka's Ambassador to the Netherlands Buddhi Athauda revealed yesterday that the Tamil Diaspora in Netherlands was ready to hold protests in support of the country outside the forthcoming Human Rights sessions.

Athauda maintained that the LTTE and its sympathisers were fast fading in the Netherlands and several attempts made by them to raise money by holding fund raising campaigns had failed.

"Many Tamils living in the Netherlands voice opposition to some LTTE supportive groups who spread diabolical lies against the Sri Lankan Government and say that they are willing to protest in support of the country in March," he said.

According to Athauda, the Sri Lankan community in the Netherlands was around 22,000 and a majority was Tamil.

He also stressed that for the pleasure of some retired diplomats and high profile people in the international community for their evening pleasure and for them to have something to do, Sri Lanka should not be victimised.

The ambassador also said that if the so-called international community raised concern against the Sri Lankan President that meant they were against 66 percent of the people of the country as the president was elected by 2/3 of the people and that was ultimate democracy.

"If democracy is the accepted theory, UN is wrong and Sri Lanka is right," Athauda added.

He questioned how the international community could say the Sri Lankan president was wrong when the majority of people in the country accepted him? They take our country hostage. How can they investigate when our people say this is the right path?

Athauda also said that if the UN had any democracy they should fire the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay or they should fire the people who plagiaries their reports by cut and paste on the internet.

"They create their reports against Sri Lanka by cut and paste and by taking figures from the air as authentic and put UN credibility into question," he said.
