Industrial and tourism zones coming in North

Five new industrial zones and several tourism zones are to be established in the North shortly. The industrial zones are to be set up in Jaffna, Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, Mannar and Mullaitivu districts. Mandativu, Karativu and Kayts islands have been earmarked to establish the tourism zones.

The government believes that the setting up of industrial and tourism zones will support unprecedented employment generation in the formerly war-ravaged north.

Authorities expect the new industries will generate at least 50,000 direct and 20,000 indirect employment opportunities.

Several investors have already come forward to establish industries in fruit based products, poultry, fish processing, sugar and roofing sheets, Northern Governor Major General G A Chandrasiri said. More than 5,000 hectares of land have also been identified for sugar cane cultivation, the Governor said.

Bird sanctuaries, golf and other play grounds, facilities for sea sports and special boat services have been planned as part of tourism zones. Several star class hotels too are slated to come up in the three islands.
