65,000 slum dwellers to get decent housing units

Slum dwellers in the Colombo City, numbering 65 thousand families will be provided a decent dwelling house at housing complexes to be built for them. A housing unit will cost over Rs. 2.5 million. Defence Secretary Mr. Gothabaya Rajapaksa refuting allegations that the lands of evicted slum dwellers are being utilized for commercial purpose, has said that a plan has been formulated to enrich the lives of slum dwellers with other common facilities such hospital, school and other infrastructure facilities.
The Defense Secretary revealed these facts when he delivered the keynote address of the national ceremony organized to mark World Habitat Day at the Jana Kala Centre at Battaramulla, yesterday. He further said that the Colombo City Beautification Programme has been undertaken after a careful study and a plan has already been formulated.Minister Wimal Weerawansa addressing the ceremony said that un-regularised habitats will be regularised whether they are legal or illegal. Deputy Ministers Lasantha Alagiyawanna also participated at the ceremony. (niz+)
