Jaffna soldiers now fighting a different war to ensure wellbeing of civilians - GA Jaffna
Soldiers and the commander SF Jaffna who fought against terrorism in the recent past are now fighting for the wellbeing of the war affected civilians and we must thank them for their noble effort " said Mrs Emelda Sukumar , the District Secretary and Government Agent Jaffna on 09 October 2010.She told the above in a function held at the Kopay Government Teachers' College to hand over wheelchairs and artificial limbs to physically handicapped civilians in the area.
Civil Affairs Office of the 511 Brigade arranged this function with sponsorship of Kandy based charitable firm " Centre for Handicapped" and 57 modern wheelchairs and 114 artificial limbs worth over Rs.5 million were handed over there.
Commander SF HQ Jaffna Major Genaral Mahinda Hathurusinghe and Government Agent Jaffna Mrs Emelda Sukumar, General Officer Commanding 51 Division Major General Janaka Welgama, Commander 511 Brigade Colonel Keerthi Costa, Chairman "Centre of Handicapped" Mr Shamal Pieris and some other invitees participated to hand over the donation among 166 civilians including children and elderly men and women with different physical disabilities.
Senior Officers of the SF - J , Civil Affairs Officer 511 Brigade Lieutenant Colonel D S Abegunasekara who coordinated the donation, officers of the donor organization, Principal Teachirs' College Mr. V K Kanapathi Pille, a large crowd of government officials and civilians were present on the occasion.
