Programme to rehabilitate war widows

The government has taken action to initiate a programme to rehabilitate the widows in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, with the assistance of India.
During the President’s visit to India he has discussed the plight of these widows with the Indian government and they have agreed to provide assistance to rehabilitate these widows, and an agreement has also been signed on this regard.
An Indian delegation is due to arrive in Sri Lanka to study about the plight of these widows and formulate measures on providing self employment training to them.
The first stage of the self employment training programme will be implemented in the Eastern Province and under the second stage widows in Vavuniya and Kilinochchi districts and other areas in the North will be rehabilitated.
The war has produced 89,000 widows in the Northern and Eastern Provinces alone. Majority of them are spouses of the former LTTE cadres. There are 49,000 of them in the Eastern Provinces and 40,000 of them in the Northern Province. 25,000 are in the Batticaloa District and out of which 12,000 are young widows, and 8,000 with 3 children.
