LTTE resurrects in Norway etc.
GET NEDIYAVAN DEPORTED
CANADA COMBATS 'PUSH BORDERS' MOVE

The remaining LTTE leaders and cadres are in a bid to re-group in Canada and Norway, Singapore-based security expert Dr. Rohan Gunaratna warned Sri Lanka yesterday.“The Sri Lankan government has not done enough to organize the arrest and deportation of Nediyavan who is behind its international human smuggling racket,” said Professor Gunaratna. He added that the government should immediately begin talks with the Norwegian government regarding the matter.“Nediyavan is a leader of the LTTE’s international criminal network and he is a trained cadre. The Sri Lankan government should immediately begin discussions with the Norwegian government to facilitate his arrest and deportation. International law has enough frameworks to arrange for that,” he said.Meanwhile, the recent arrest of more than 150 Tamil migrants by Thai authorities in an immigration sweep in Bangkok was the outcome of cooperation between Thai, Canadian and Australian authorities said Gunaratna. He added that these migrants were likely destined for Canada aboard a human smuggling ship.“These countries are very much concerned about the wave of bogus/economic migrants. They were trying to carry out a ‘push borders strategy’ since Canada’s refugee laws make it nearly impossible to deter or deport certain classes of migrants,” he said.Gunaratna added that the Canadian authorities are already carrying out an investigation on the LTTE criminal wing and its leaders. He added that since Canadian security officials have to first follow numerous steps before making arrests, those steps are taking time.“There is an idea that the Canadians are lenient towards the LTTE. That is not true. Canadian officials are conducting an investigation about these illegal activities but since they don’t have power like our security forces do, it takes time.”
