IOM Admires Army's Role in De-mining & Resettlement in Jaffna

A three member high ranking UN officials met Commander Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe at the SF-J Headquarters Palaly to review the progress of de-mining process and resettlement of displaced persons in Jaffna.
The delegation representing International Organization for Migration (IOM) comprised Chief of Mission Mr. Richard Danziger, Head Early Recovery/Livelihood Development Mr. Patrick Charignon and Project Manager/Head of Sub Office Ms. Sophie Nuom.
Commander SF-J explained the progress of the de-mining presently being carried out by the Army Engineers together with foreign de-mining agencies and resettlement of displaced persons in their original homesteads. He further educated the UN officials that only 333 families are to be resettled in Jaffna with assistance of the Government Agent as soon as de-mining is completed in Chalai and Thalaiadi areas.
Pleased with the ongoing humanitarian projects by the Army in the peninsula, IOM officials briefed Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe of their future plans including enhancing livelihood facilities and constructing temporary shelters for the affected people in Jaffna to which the SF-J Commander pledged fullest support.
