Achchuveli industrial estate soon
1 Oct 2010 - 13:33
The development of the Jaffna Industrial Estate in Achchuveli, that has been defunct since 1986 due to LTTE terrorist activities in the North, will start next month with funds being granted by the Indian government. India has committed a grant of Rs.178 million in support of its efforts to revive the Achchuveli Industrial Estate, quoting the Secretary of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises Development Ministry V Sivagnanasothi, Daily News reported.
The Industrial Estate is set to give a fillip to local job opportunities in the North expecting to generate over 4,000 jobs for youth in the Province, he added.
The development will take place on a 24 acre land and basic infrastructure facilities, such as water supply, access roads, electricity, factory building and an administrative building will be constructed at the site, the Secretary said.
About 36 apparel and plastic industries will be launched in the facility. Big players in garments manufacture and exports, such as Brandix and MAS Holdings have shown their interest to start operations, he said.
A Steering Committee has been instituted with representatives from Indian High Commission, Finance Ministry and Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises, to oversee the development of the project, the Secretary said. Courtesy:priu.gov.lk
