Intelligence acquired by the Sri Lankan government showed that international supporters of the LTTE were attempting to resurrect the defeated terrorist organization, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said yesterday.
Elaborating on this, Mr. Rajapaksa said that, despite the deaths of Prabhakaran and other leaders, the organisation’s international connections had not been destroyed. But due to the excellence of our intelligence services, they had been able to arrest even some key LTTE international activists.
Addressing about 5,000 members of the armed forces and police in Punani, he said that despite the thirty year old terrorist threat being destroyed, they should not be complacent; and that all those entrusted with the protection of the country had an equal responsibility to protect what had been achieved, regardless of their rank.
“Terrorism is trying to raise its head again in a different guise; we cannot allow this to happen. Our three Armed Forces, the Police and the Civil Defence Force have to act with a clear understanding to stop this resurgence,” he said.
The Defence Secretary went on to say that the devotion and sacrifices of the members of the Police Force and Civil Defence Force had helped to overcome the terrorist threat, and now they needed to work towards safeguarding what had been won.
He added that the security position in the North and the East were strengthened. Up to now the Armed Forces had built their camps without a proper and a logical base -- in schools and in government buildings, he said.
Army Commander Lt.General Jagath Jayasuriya, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe, Air Force Commander Air Vice Marshal Roshan Gunathileke, Acting IGP N.K. Ilangakone and the Commander of the East, Major General Sunil Udumalagala also participated in the official visit.
The Defence Secretary also inspected the Rehabilitation Centre in Welikanda – Senapura, and awarded certificates to the rehabilitated LTTErs.
