North development commendable - Akashi to President
The progress in the Government initiated development programmes in the North to uplift the lives of people who suffered due to terrorism, is commendable, stated Japanese Special envoy Yasushi Akashi at his meeting with President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Saturday (19 June).
He noted that the Government is carrying out the resettlement of IDPs in a speedy and efficient manner parallel to the Northern development programmes, adding that Japan would provide continuous assistance to Sri Lanka in its development process.
He further told President Rajapaksa that comparing with his previous visits to Kilinochchi, there were significant changes in the areas with the current development programmes taking place.
Akashi stated that he witnessed Tamil civilians leading better lives in contentment with the social, economic and cultural changes taking place, emphasizing that this was evident of the government's efforts to create an environment of mutual understanding and sustainable peace for all communities.
