Minister to inspect de-mining in Vavuniya
Resettlement Minister Milroy Fernando will inspect the de-mined areas in the Vavuniya District before the new batch of Internally Displaced Persons were settled in the area Sunday.
There were around 17,282 families to be resettled in Vavuniya district and the total number of IDPs remaining to be resettled now was 57,012.
The government's aim is to send the remaining IDPs back to their native places as soon as the land area is cleared of mines, a senior officer from the Ministry said.
It was not only the infrastructure development that had to be done in these areas after the war but also the spiritual development in the minds of the people, he explained.A special program for widows and women to start self-employment to enhance their economic status is also being implemented. Education of IDP children IDPs was among the priorities, he noted. These programs were started in addition to the basic needs provided to them like dry rations, sanitary facilities and medical facilities and the grant of Rs 25,000 to enable them to rebuild their houses, the officer said.
The Government had allocated Rs 250 million this year for the resettlement program to develop the infrastructure and to upgrade the living standards of the IDPs.
