IDPs drop to 33,000

800 resettled today Eight hundred (800) Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Menik Farm Relief Villages are being resettled in Mullativu today (Aug 25). With that, the total number of IDPs will be dropped to 33,000, according to the Chief Coordinating Officer of the Competent Office for IDPs in Vavuniya, Colonel Vadugodapitiya.
Meanwhile, the Government has taken action to build over 18,000 new housing units in Kilinochchi District to facilitate the resettlement of IDPs. The World Bank has provided financial assistance to construct 4,780 out of the total.
Under the Government’s North East Housing Programme (NEHRP), each recipient family will be provided with a house to the value of Rs.325,000.
Out of the 50,000 houses to be constructed by the Government of India in the North for the IDPS, 12,500 are to be distributed among the IDPs families in the Kilinochchi district.
At a District Development Committee meeting held 23 Aug, Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa said that out of 12,500 families displaced in the Mannar District, only 543 persons belonging to 145 families remain to be resettled. Under the Mannar resettlement program which began on April 30, 2007, 46, 774 persons belonging to 12,355 families have already been resettled in their original lands after de-mining.
The Minister added that there are only 12 Grama Sewa (GS) Divisions in Mannar left to be de-mined and already 141 GS Divisions have been declared mine free.
