Sri Lankan Refugees in Tamil Nadu returns

With the end of war and peace and stability becoming a reality in the Northern and Eastern provinces, Sri Lankan Tamil who were living in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu as refugees due to the terrorist problem that affected their residential areas have commenced returning to Sri Lanka. The United Nations High Commission for Refugees officials in Tamil Nadu says that about 1,000 Sri Lankan refugees in Tamil Nadu had gone back to their homeland with the assistance UNHCR from January this year.
The Chief of the UNHCR Mission in Tamil Nadu Dr Montserrat Feixas Vihe, has said that UNHCR was ready to provide assistance to all refugees who want to return to Sri Lanka.
She has praised India for being generous in treating the refugees by providing them adequate access to health and educational services and not forcing the refugees to leave the country, despite not being a signatory to the 1951 convention relating to the status of refugees. In additional to Sri Lankan Tamils, there are refugees from Myanmar, Tibet and Afghanistan in India.
